For almost a millennium, the University of Oxford has provided people with the means for understanding and appreciating other cultures through the study of language, the arts, religion, philosophy, history, and social life of peoples who exist not in isolation but in conditions of extensive interaction and mutual change.
Through scientific research the University has helped confront the greatest challenges faced by humanity and has helped make sense of a world where cultures, economies, and value systems interact with increasing frequency and speed and which are transformed in the process.
As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, the University of Oxford is a unique and historic institution. Though there is no clear date of foundation, teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096. Over the last 900 years, Oxford has been educating leaders in every field of human endeavour and continues to do so.
Its students, academics and alumni come from, and work in, every corner of the globe. They lead and change societies through their teaching and research; through the leadership they provide in business, politics and the media, and through transmitting and applying the skills they acquired at Oxford.
Each year the University welcomes students, at both undergraduate and graduate level, from 140 different countries and territories. Students are attracted by the chance to study at an internationally renowned university, with outstanding academic achievement and innovation, alongside leading researchers in their field. The University has excellent facilities and resources for learning in its world-famous libraries, laboratories and museums.
